"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" ~ 1 John 3:1
Elementary School Chapel
2011-12 K-5 CHAPEL THEME: Discovering God through ART! 8:45-9:15 in the dome.
This week we looked at the Parable of the Sower found in Matthew 13. Artists have painted sowers and fields as long as painting has been done because this was a reality in life: seeds had to be scattered! Van Gogh and Millat's paintings showed us how the sower spread his seed: broadly, covering the ground. But when Jesus told this parable in the Book of Matthew, he was using symbolism...that the seed is like the Word of God. And our hearts are like the different soils he described. When I spoke of the seeds I spread a bunch I'd gathered on a tablecloth on the floor - the visual helped us to see that some seeds fall on the side of the road...and others fall in places where they don't grow very well. We talked about the condition of our hearts and whether we're good listeners or not. Are our hearts soft or filled with concerns (rocks...thorns...) that get in the way of growth?
In Kindergarten I brought in a big box of long, dry seed pods that I collected in the fall. Again, I laid out the tablecloth. I stuck some seeds in the pages of my Bible and as I walked among the seated children they raised their faces with delight. How I hope that this is a picture of how they'll LOOK for God's Word in their lives! Toward the end of my time with them, I opened one of the long dry pods and the amount of seeds inside thrilled them. (I do LOVE how these sorts of things satisfy and delight them!!!). And then I let them fall to the ground...and you would have thought the kids were collecting gold dust. They were so happy it made me laugh. A few of the kids said: "This is a Bible Party!" Enough said. :-D
FEB. 13-16 IS SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK! That's next week, so if you are able to join us - we'd love to have you! Our theme is: "God as Artist! Being fearfully & wonderfully made!" Each day's chapel will begin at 8:45 and will end around 9:15.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAPEL - Wednesdays, 10:00-10:50 in the Spanish Church "Cristo Salva"
The 8th grade class blessed our socks off yesterday in Chapel. We were treated to three Bible dramas and enjoyed laughter and learning together. I do not think the kids will easily forget the stories we saw unfolding before us, or the ad-libbing done by our very funny 8th graders. What a great way for the kids to learn about God's Story! After each drama we debriefed for a short time about the meaning of such stories: Joseph and his brothers...Rahab and the spies...Miriam and the fate of her baby brother, Moses...
Being exposed to these light-hearted dramas will help us as we continue to move toward a deeper understanding of the story of God's people in Bible Class...

2011-12 MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAPEL/BIBLE THEME: Encountering Jesus through the New Testament. Chapel - Wed., 10:00-10:50 in Cristo Salva (the Spanish Church).
Bible is held 3 times weekly, and Chapel once a week. As we encounter Christ we will strive to DO the things he
did — helping the poor or praying, sharing bread together or
speaking words of healing. As Jesus journeyed with others they became his disciples. Our goal is to walk freely in our
identity as disciples, to persevere as we seek to life a life of grace.
In Heb. 10:24 Paul says: "Let us consider how we may spur one another on
toward love and good deeds." (10:24) The bottom line is this: for kids
to have a vital faith they need it to be REAL. Making a difference in
our world, serving others, seeing how our actions (deeds) bring about
positive change — such things cause faith to grow! "Faith, by itself, if
it is not accompanied by action, is dead." (James 2:17)

Lauren Mesa, Chaplain
Lauren, who has served as a spiritual leader with children for 17 years,
has been with CCS as Spiritual Director since 2002. She creates and
teaches two distinctly different weekly Chapels — for K-5 and middle
school, 6-8th. Lauren, who is also an artist and writer, brings her
gifts to bear as she teaches middle school Bible & Art, as well as
various other elective classes. "Godly Play" is a class she teaches
weekly to our "wee" ones, who apply what they learn in Chapel through
art and puppetry. She loves her job with your children, appreciating
that she gets to work among all age groups — the "little people" and the
"older, cool ones".
