"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"  ~ 1 John 3:1

At CCS, K-5 students receive Bible instruction in a variety of ways.

They experience a weekly chapel on Wednesdays where they worship God through music and hear a message presented by our chaplain related to our yearly theme. Following chapel, their classroom teacher leads them in a conversation about the chapel message to help "ground" them in what they learned in chapel.

They also receive Bible instruction within their classrooms which combines Old and New Testament stories of people who experienced God. Each grade level has been a spiritual lens assigned to it to allow teachers to focus on a BIG IDEA that relates to their understanding of God and His love for His children. The lenses for each grade level are:
  • Kindergarten: Who God is - they learn all about His character and Nature
  • 1st grade: Who God is continues, transitioning into how we respond to this loving God - they learn how to receive Christ into their heart
  • 2nd grade: How do we change once God lives in our hearts? The fruits of the Holy Spirit and Christlike character are the focus in 2nd grade
  • 3rd grade: The students learn all about God's Word, who wrote it, all the types of literature it contains, how we can use it to help us follow Jesus, etc. They memorize the books of the Bible to a song.
  • 4th grade: They learn all about conversing with God, and how God answers prayer.
  • 5th grade: Worship is the focus! How we worship this living AWESOME GOD!

2011-12 K-5 CHAPEL THEME: Discovering God through ART!

Chapel at CCS is a time when children are in an environment  conducive toward growth in Christ. Jesus said, "If you see me, you will see the Father." It is our goal that the children experience God in creative ways at CCS so they will  grow to  be upright and glorious, a "planting of the Lord." (Is. 61).

When we LOOK at William Holman Hunt's "Jesus at the Door" we'll need to ask ourselves: have we opened the door to the Christ? Schumann said, "To send light into the darkness of men's hearts—such is the duty of the artist." As we LOOK at art this year we will absorb the spiritual truth behind paintings, sculpture, cathedrals, photography and more. We will focus on our identity as children of God...how to live peacefully & gratefully, learn better how to care  for the poor...consider if & how our lives  reflect God...and much more. And, if you'd like to join us, please do! 8:45-9:15 every Wed., in the dome.

As we encounter Christ we will strive to DO the things he did— whether by helping the poor or praying, sharing bread together or speaking words of healing. As Jesus journeyed with others—men and women— they became his disciples.  Our goal is to walk freely in our identity as disciples, to persevere as we seek to life a life of grace.  In Heb. 10: 24 Paul says: "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." (10:24). The bottom line is this: for kids to have a vital faith they need it to be REAL. Making a difference in our world, serving others, seeing how our actions (deeds) bring about positive change—such things cause faith to  grow!   "Faith, by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." (James 2:17)

2011-12 MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAPEL/BIBLE THEME:  "Encountering Jesus through the New Testament: Loving, Knowing, Discovering & Living!"

Bible is held 3 times weekly, and Chapel is once weekly, on Wednesdays, at 10:10 - 10:55am, in the Spanish Church which is aptly called Christo Salva, Christ saves. Our deepest desire is that Christ will save us from a life of unknowns, insecurity, drudgery, joylessness, despair, happenstance, failure & fearfulness…the list could go on and on. We need Jesus to live a joyful, meaningful and productive life...this list can also go on & on! Parents are ALWAYS welcome to attend Chapel.
Chapel Schedule:

1st & 2nd Wed.: devoted to teaching/guest speakers (from church youth groups; WYAM, Young Life/WyldLife; Jesus Center; etc.)
3rd Wed.: worshipping God with guest musicians and students. Worship is not only about music; it also includes readings, drama, testimony and art.
4th Wed.: Character Awards, and time permitting - peer affirmations.

Lauren Mesa, Chaplain
Lauren, who has served as a spiritual leader with children for 17 years, has been with CCS as Spiritual Director since 2002. She creates and teaches two distinctly different weekly Chapels — for Kindergarten-5th grade and middle school, 6-8th grade.  Lauren, who is also an artist and writer, brings her gifts to bear as she teaches middle school Bible & Art, as well as various other elective classes. "Godly Play" is a class she teaches weekly to our "wee" ones, who apply what they learn in Chapel through art and puppetry. She loves her job with your children, appreciating that she gets to work among all age groups — the "little people" and the "older, cool ones".

Lauren and her husband, Rick, a financial consultant & awesome flyfisherman, are Chico State grads. They've been married since 1983 and have two children: Gabriel and Kate. Both Gabe and Katie attended CCS and look back on their years here with great fondness.
